Playwriting FAQ 

  • Submissions begin December 1, 2023.
  • Deadline for submissions is midnight, March 31, 2024.
  • You must submit the following on the registration form:
      • Your name, mailing address, email, phone number, and a photo of yourself.
      • A PDF of your original play as follows:
        Submissions should be saved as a pdf with the format.  Remember to complete an “Original Works” form and submit with your script.
        Please follow these standard formatting rules:
      • Act and Scene Headings are Centered.
      • Character’s Names are Centered and Capitalized.
      • Stage Directions are Indented one tab and Italicized.
      • Character’s Names in Stage Directions are Capitalized.
      • Parenthetical Stage Directions are used for Small Actions.
  • Complete an ‘Original Works’ form.
  • Check one of the following for your submission: ‘Middle Years Play’ or ‘High School Play or “both Middle Years and High School Play.’
  • Check an Option: Option 1 – Playwriting only; Option 2- Playwriting and Scene Presentation.
  • If choosing Option 2, when submitting the ‘Scene Presentation’ portion of your entry, you must start your video as follows:
      • State your name and the names of all performers in the scene;
      • A short introduction of the work you are presenting;
      • Submit your memorized video recording either with or without costumes and/or props. Specific backgrounds can be used but are not required;
      • Attach your YouTube link of your performance to the entry form.
  • Your parent/guardian (if 18 and under) must complete a Student Membership and Participant Application. Note: If you are choosing Option 2, SDA must receive a Student Membership and Participation Application for all student performers in the scene.
  • All participants must complete the applicable SDA membership application.
Please Note
  • Competitors must live or study in the Province of Saskatchewan, with the inclusion of Lloydminster, Alberta.
  • Entries will be adjudicated and awards presented as determined by the adjudicator. The adjudicator’s decision is final.
  • Selected plays will be available to members through the SDA Mary Ellen Burgess Library.
  • Option 2 Scene entries will be posted on SDA’s YouTube Channel.
  • If you have selected the ‘Dramaturgy’ option on your registration form, you will be contact when this becomes available.
